Former India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has talked candidly about how Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli impacted his career, emphasizing how Rohit’s leadership style and their approach to fitness shaped his perspective of the game.
On the 42nd episode of the Dubai Journey series on the Mashable Middle East YouTube channel, Suryakumar expressed his opinions to television host Rannvijay Singha. Rohit taught him the value of understanding teammates and fostering strong relationships within a team, while Kohli inspired him with his dedication to fitness and training.
When Kohli was captaining the Indian squad in 2021, Suryakumar made his debut for his country. The Mumbai batsman recalled deliberately trying to watch Kohli’s training regimens and pick up tips from his preparation style.
Suryakumar Yadav describes how Virat Kohli affected his level of fitness
When asked about the Indian cricket player he looked up to for strength and fitness, Suryakumar mentioned Kohli and described how he learned about the standards needed at the top level by watching him train.
He had heard from other players about Kohli’s commitment, but witnessing the former captain in action during training sessions helped him understand his work ethic better. He was the captain when I debuted for India in 2021. Suryakumar remarked, “I had only heard from other players how he carried himself during the session when I first saw him during a practice session. “I used to keep track of my training sessions with him so I could observe what he was practicing. He was and continues to be an entirely different beast,” he continued.
With his exceptional athleticism and fielding skills, Suryakumar has become one of India’s most well-known T20I batters. During the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa, he made an incredible catch close to the boundary to dismiss David Miller at a pivotal point in the game, making it one of his most memorable on-field moments.
Suryakumar Yadav discusses how Rohit Sharma taught him leadership skills
Suryakumar’s fitness philosophy was influenced by Kohli, but Rohit’s leadership and ability to relate to players made a lasting impression.
In 2018, while Rohit was leading the Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar rejoined the team. Before continuing their relationship with the Indian team under Rohit’s captaincy, the two had a fruitful time together at the IPL team, winning titles in 2019 and 2020.
When Suryakumar thought back on what he had learned from Rohit, he emphasized the former India captain’s ability to keep the team at ease, his understanding of players, and his calm demeanor. I have played a lot of cricket with him and under him, so it goes without saying that he has leadership qualities,” Suryakumar remarked. How he understands players, carries himself on the field and off the field. Calm, calm, and very at ease. “And there’s a little humor,” he continued.

The Indian batter also remembered how Rohit would go out to dinner and coffee with teammates when they weren’t playing cricket. Suryakumar claims that these exchanges improved Rohit’s comprehension of players and gave him insight into their thoughts.
According to Suryakumar, a captain’s responsibilities go beyond what takes place on the field because effective team management requires an understanding of each individual. Everything you see on the ground is a result of your actions off the field. He stated, “You have to comprehend every single player because if you are playing an individual sport, it is simple because it is all you. “However, when participating in a team sport, you also need to be aware of what the other players are doing,” he said.
