Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recall to the national team has been supported by India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, who claims the seasoned pacer can succeed in the shortest format and brings valuable experience. India’s squad for the five-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand, which starts on October 22, 2026, at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, includes Bhuvneshwar.
After 1,425 days away from T20I cricket, the 36-year-old seamer is back. Before being called up as an emergency replacement for the injured Arshdeep Singh ahead of the fifth T20I against the West Indies on October 17, 2026, he missed 104 consecutive Twenty20 International matches. His last appearance in the format was on November 22, 2022. Without a ball being bowled, that match was canceled.
“Bhuvi undoubtedly contributes a wealth of experience to the team. Particularly after the IPL, we were a little lacking in that. Many of our bowlers were new. Shreyas Iyer stated at the pre-match press conference, “But in T20, if you look at his career graph, he has won IPL in the last two years, so he has a very good idea about how to dominate this format.”
The key to Bhuvneshwar’s recall was his IPL performance. During the 2026 Indian Premier League, he helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru defend their title by taking 28 wickets in 16 games. After five games, India’s Twenty20 International series against the West Indies ended in a 2-2 draw.
Why did Shreyas Iyer draw attention to Bhuvneshwar Kuma’s circumstances in New Zealand?
Another reason Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion made sense, according to Shreyas Iyer, was the characteristics of New Zealand pitches. Pace bowling is known to benefit from the conditions in New Zealand, and Shreyas Iyer admitted that the team would need some time to adjust before the series opener.
“Fast bowling works best in this situation. I’ve been here before, too. It’s not that the circumstances are entirely different. However, they had prepared wickets based on our batting style when we played in England. Since nobody can predict the wicket’s conditions on any given day, we will make every effort to acclimate as quickly as we can. And everyone will have a decent understanding of how to plan if we have a good practice session,” Shreyas Iyer stated.
Bhuvneshwar was an easy pick for the management in a format where swing and seam movement can be crucial because of his familiarity with international conditions and his recent domestic performance.
The addition of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to the team attracted notice in addition to Bhuvneshwar’s recall. In response to inquiries regarding the young player’s lack of opportunities, Iyer pointed out that India’s established openers have been playing consistently and were a member of the team that won the World Cup. “It’s important that a talent like him should always be happy around the dressing room,” he added, pointing out the wider advantages of Sooryavanshi traveling abroad with the team.

He’s very young. He still has years to seize the chance. Our openers have won the World Cup and are constantly scoring, so it’s not like he can just walk in. As you can see, he will have a good idea of how to play in these specific wickets when he travels abroad. He will therefore be well-prepared the next time he encounters these circumstances. He will, in a sense, be inspired to score runs here as well. He can also teach other young people who are coming for the first time, according to Iyer.
Shreyas Iyer acknowledged the difficulty of overseeing a deep group of players when discussing competition for spots in the squad.
“In a way, it’s beneficial and inspires the current team members to perform consistently for the team. Winning the game is the most crucial thing. That is the ultimate objective. Iyer stated, “I just want to say that it’s a sweet headache, but it’s important for every team.”
