After being held in the Middle East for the past four years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction is set to return to India—a long-awaited development. According to an report, the upcoming IPL 2027 mini-auction is likely to take place on December 16 at the ITC Grand Hotel in Goa.

The previous three auction processes were held abroad (in Dubai, Jeddah—for the mega-auction—and Abu Dhabi). The primary reason for this was logistical challenges in India, specifically the difficulty in securing venues during the country’s peak wedding season.
BCCI officials, including IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, have consistently maintained that hosting the event in India remains the Board’s top priority, provided that the schedule and the availability of hotel accommodations allow for it. As this year’s event is a ‘mini-auction,’ managing the logistics within the country has become significantly more feasible.
Franchises have already received preliminary information from the BCCI’s logistics team regarding travel, accommodation, and strategic meetings for the Goa event, with a formal public circular expected to be issued soon.

Several notable player trades have already taken place ahead of the auction. In a major move, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has returned to the Delhi Capitals from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), while spinner Kuldeep Yadav has moved from Delhi to the Lucknow Super Giants. In another significant trade, left-arm fast bowler T. Natarajan has returned to the Sunrisers Hyderabad, with spinner Zeeshan Ansari moving to Delhi as part of the exchange. IPL 2027, which will be the 20th edition of the tournament, is expected to run from March 10 to May 15, 2027. The BCCI has proposed an earlier start to avoid the intense summer heat. The league will feature 10 franchises and will be played in a 74-match format.
