Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has questioned the exclusion of fast bowler Mohammed Shami from the squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. Mohammad Kaif believes that Shami has been performing consistently well in domestic cricket, yet he continues to be overlooked for the Indian team.
In light of this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should clarify the reasons behind his omission. Shami’s name is missing from the T20, ODI, and Test squads announced for the New Zealand tour; however, the BCCI has yet to provide an official explanation for his exclusion.
Mohammad Kaif has emphasized the need for transparency in the team selection process. He argues that if Mohammed Shami is not being selected, the selectors should provide a reason. Citing the example of Jasprit Bumrah—who also bowls in short spells and is frequently granted rest—Kaif suggests that excluding Mohammed Shami on similar grounds does not seem justified.
Mohammed Shami’s stellar performance in domestic cricket
Playing for Bengal in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, Mohammed Shami claimed 37 wickets across 7 matches, including three five-wicket hauls.
Furthermore, he also took five wickets in the first innings of a Ranji Trophy match against Services in October 2026. Despite these efforts, questions regarding his fitness persist.
Meanwhile, Kaif also praised Shami’s past performances against New Zealand, noting that the Kiwi batters would likely prefer not to face him. Shami bowled exceptionally well against New Zealand during the 2023 ODI World Cup—his performance, particularly in the semi-final, played a crucial role in India’s victory.

It is worth noting that Mohammed Shami’s last international appearance for India was in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. Additionally, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has earned a recall to the T20 squad for the New Zealand tour after nearly four years, Shami has not been given an opportunity. Given this, there is a lot of discussion on social media regarding his selection.
