Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has strongly advocated for the careful management of Jasprit Bumrah’s workload. He believes that the premier fast bowler should not play across all three international formats leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Discussing India’s packed schedule ahead of the tour to New Zealand, Shastri emphasized that Bumrah’s long-term fitness and overall impact should take precedence over his participation in a relentless series of limited-overs (white-ball) matches. According to the former coach, Bumrah should channel most of his energy into Test cricket, while limiting his appearances in ODIs and T20Is to select occasions.
“I don’t think he should be playing all three formats leading up to the World Cup,” says Shastri.
Speaking to *The Times of India*, Shastri stated, “I don’t think he should be playing all three formats until the World Cup. He should focus primarily on Test cricket and play only the occasional ODI or T20I. I would prefer to save him for the two Test matches in New Zealand, where his role will be crucial.”

Ravi Shastri noted that given the seam-friendly conditions expected in New Zealand, it is essential for India’s primary fast bowlers to be in peak physical condition. Preserving Jasprit Bumrah for critical red-ball encounters is vital—especially as India faces a challenging path in the World Test Championship standings, requiring consistent victories in away conditions.
In addition to his advice regarding Bumrah, Shastri also supported the recall of experienced fast bowlers, given the team’s demanding schedule. He specifically backed the inclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the T20I side, citing his ability to generate swing. Supporting Mohammed Shami’s return to the national team, India’s former coach stated that the senior fast bowler has performed so well with both the red and white balls that he should be selected for the Test and ODI squads.
