Before the 2026–2027 domestic season, leg-spinner Rahul Chahar has been confirmed as a guest player for Jammu and Kashmir. His debut for the team is anticipated to occur in J&K’s third Ranji Trophy match, which is set against Baroda, according to a Kashmir Sports Watch exclusive that was released on October 18, 2026.
Since 2016, Rahul Chahar has played domestic cricket for Rajasthan. Between 2019 and 2021, he represented India in six T20 internationals and one ODI, earning him recognition on a global scale. Throughout his IPL career, he has made appearances for the Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Chennai Super Kings. He most recently continued his international experience by representing Surrey in county cricket in 2025–2026.
After winning their first-ever Ranji Trophy in 2025–2026, Jammu and Kashmir enters the 2026–2027 season as the defending champions.
Why has Rahul Chahar been signed by J&K as a guest player?
Priority one for the defending champions’ bowling attack going into the new season was a specialist leg-spinner. Rahul Chahar was the chosen applicant for that position due to his combination of global exposure and vast franchise experience from four IPL teams.
Murugan Ashwin of Tamil Nadu was previously brought in by J&K as a guest player. Ashwin’s participation in the association was limited to white-ball formats, though, so the red-ball team lacked a legitimate leg-spin option. Since Ashwin has since left Indian cricket, the association is in greater need of a wrist-spin specialist for the Ranji Trophy setup. Rahul Chahar has been signed by J&K because he is a skilled leg-spinner and has a lot of experience, a source told Kashmir Sports Watch.

For the first time under the guest player system, J&K has a reliable spin option in the longer format thanks to Chahar’s inclusion. At a time when the competition is still developing, his expected debut against Baroda in the third game of the season would give the team an experienced wrist-spinner and give the reigning champions a valuable bowling asset early in their title defense.
In recent seasons, J&K has been able to add proven players to their roster through the guest player mechanism, and Chahar is among the more well-known acquisitions the team has made using this method. His arrival brings real depth to a team hoping to hold onto the Ranji Trophy title they won for the first time in 2025–2026. He has represented India internationally and played at the top level of franchise cricket.
