On October 13, 2026, Australia finished the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban, defeating South Africa by 214 runs. Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa, suffered his first loss as Test captain after 12 straight victories in the match, which took place from October 9 to 13.

Australia recovered to post 390 all out in their first innings, with Matt Renshaw contributing 190, after being reduced to 124/6 on the opening day. South Africa avoided the follow-on with a response of 284. South Africa was given a target of 420 runs when Australia declared their second innings at 314/6. Before being bowled out for 206 on day five and losing by 214 runs, South Africa finished day four at 102/4 in their second innings. Indeed, it has.

It’s not how you want to begin a series of any kind, much less one against an elite team like Australia. The feelings are still strong. Before you begin the conversations and truly comprehend [what happened], you want that to settle. However, there are clearly areas where we could do better, both in terms of bowling and batting. After the game, Temba Bavuma stated, “No-one is happy in that changeroom,” .

Regarding Australia’s recuperation from 124/6, what did Temba Bavuma say?

Australia’s comeback from a vulnerable position was cited by Temba Bavuma as a pivotal moment that changed the course of the game. Australia was in trouble with South Africa’s bowlers at 124/6 in the first innings, but the visitors managed to post 390, with Renshaw’s 190 being crucial. Temba Bavuma admitted that South Africa was unable to take advantage of the subsequent batting conditions and that the size of Australia’s final total had a psychological effect on his team. Indeed, that contributes to the disappointment.

The Australians deserve praise for their perseverance when we had them at 120 [124] for six. You’re supporting your attack by limiting them to fewer than 250. It was mentally taxing for them to go and get the score they did. We didn’t take full advantage of the favorable batting conditions,” Temba Bavuma remarked.

Temba Bavuma also considered how South Africa had batted in both innings. He observed that some players were subjected to pressure they were not used to and that there were soft dismissals. It’s about evaluating the circumstances. We try to play a certain way if the pitch instructs us to. We have succeeded because we have adhered to that strategy. There hasn’t been any change in the discussions that preceded this game. Soft dismissals were made. We could include me in that group. Those things are eliminated when you play against an elite team. Without a doubt, our players weren’t playing carelessly or without caution. However, some of the guys weren’t used to the amount of pressure,” he continued.

Australia had played six Tests in the 11 months prior to this match, while South Africa had not played a Test. Temba Bavuma acknowledged the lack of match practice, but he refrained from making it an excuse. With a career-best 6/49 in South Africa’s second innings, Josh Hazlewood was Australia’s standout bowler. South Africa’s top scorer in that innings, Aiden Markram, scored 75, but the hosts were bowled out for 206, missing their target by 214 runs.

I’ll never be able to use that as an excuse. We anticipated seeing that in front of us. We had a chance to get as ready as we could. Indeed, playing Test cricket is the only way to truly prepare for the game. However, many of our errors were mental in nature. You know, that’s where we truly failed ourselves. Hopefully, any cobwebs that were present will have been removed.Bavuma stated.

St George’s Park in Centurion will host the series’ second Test on Sunday. After a challenging start to the 2026–27 season, South Africa will try to tie the series.
