In the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban, South Africa’s batting coach Ashwell Prince addressed the media after his team’s first innings ended at 284, with the hosts trailing Australia by 106 runs. South Africa had a sizable deficit to overcome after the home team’s hitters produced a series of subpar strokes on a pitch that did little to help the bowlers.

Ashwell Prince addressed the media after his team’s first innings ended at 284

A number of dismissals that ended promising partnerships characterized the innings. Not one of the six South African hitters who reached 30 or more went on to score 50. Simon Harmer, who finished undefeated on 35, and David Bedingham were the only players to encounter more than 70 balls apiece. Ashwell Prince was open about the credit owed to Australia, who scored a career-high 190 thanks to Matt Renshaw’s 390. Matt Renshaw deserves a lot of praise for his incredible innings.

He adopted a strategy of wearing down the bowlers. He was very good at that. However, each player who represents a team has a unique style of batting. There are men who are more aggressive than others. Some men are more inclined than others to pursue their strokes. They enjoy the benefits over extended periods of time. In the press conference following the day’s play, Prince stated, “And sometimes it doesn’t pay off.”

Three half-century partnerships that were all given up without being converted threatened the innings. One such stand was shared by Aiden Markram and David Bedingham , another by Tristan Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder, and a third by Harmer and Anrich Nortje. In their innings, Australia also created three fifty-plus stands; however, one of these, between Matt Renshaw and Nathan Lyon, was extended to 134, setting a record for Australia’s ninth-wicket partnership against South Africa in Test cricket.

The timing of Ryan Rickelton‘s termination was equally detrimental. With 43 deliveries left in Saturday’s game, he drove loosely at Cummins to third slip just nine balls into the inning. Keshav Maharaj dropped to one knee at the opposite end of the order and covered with a crossbatted shot off Mitchell Starc. The lone exception was Nortje, batting at number eleven, who correctly pushed forward before nudging to slip to end the innings.

Before smearing a sweep off Lyon and hitting two cover drives off Josh Hazlewood, the second of which took South Africa past the follow-on target, Marco Jansen amused the crowd for a short while by pulling Cummins for two boundaries from his opening two balls and flat-batting the same bowler past mid-on. Australia discovered that Jansen only had one mode, though, and he quickly drove at a Hazlewood delivery, almost made a catch at mid-on, and then shoveled the subsequent ball to mid-off.

Prince was calm in his evaluation during the press conference, despite the obvious frustration of witnessing his hitters dismiss themselves with careless strokes on a calm surface. He rejected the idea that the underlying cause was excessive aggression. It wasn’t excessively aggressive, in my opinion. I didn’t think the dismissals were timely. We lost a wicket each time we appeared to be starting something,” he remarked.

South Africa will need to put in a lot more effort than they did in their first innings at Kingsmead in order to either save the game or figure out how to overcome Australia’s first-innings advantage.
