Ahead of IPL 2027, the Mumbai Indians are reportedly reevaluating their captaincy arrangement, with Rohit Sharma emerging as a front-runner to reclaim the position he held for a number of years prior to being replaced. The franchise has not released an official confirmation.
Rohit Sharma is at the top of the list of applicants that the MI management is considering. The development comes after Rohit was stripped of his captaincy position prior to IPL 2024 and served the team exclusively as a specialist batter for three seasons, from 2024 to 2026.
On December 15, 2023, Hardik Pandya took Rohit Sharma’s place as MI captain in advance of IPL 2024. Given Rohit’s long tenure as the franchise’s leader, the decision garnered a lot of attention at the time. The captaincy issue has reappeared ahead of the upcoming season, with the management reportedly considering other options.
MI only made it to the playoffs once in three seasons while Hardik was captain. Under the direction of the Baroda all-rounder, MI placed last in the IPL 2024 standings. With just four victories and ten losses from 14 games, the five-time champions finished at No. 9 this year.
What accomplishments has MI captain Rohit Sharma made?
As captain of the Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma shared MS Dhoni’s five IPL championships. Compared to Dhoni, Rohit accomplished that milestone in fewer seasons, demonstrating how consistently he led the team during his time there.
Rohit Sharma has an outstanding leadership record on a global scale. He became one of the most decorated captains in Indian cricket history by leading his team to the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2024.
