A five-match T20 series between India and New Zealand is set to begin on October 22, 2026. Ahead of this series, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer has made a significant statement regarding young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
He clarified that Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma will open the innings for India against New Zealand. Consequently, despite his excellent form, it is unlikely that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will get an opportunity to open.
Shreyas Iyer’s remarks on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Before the first match of the series, Shreyas Iyer noted that while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is an exceptionally talented player, he will have to wait for his turn. Iyer stated, “It is important for a young player like Vaibhav to remain happy and positive in the dressing room. He is still very young and will get plenty of opportunities in the future. For now, he cannot be slotted directly into the team, as our current opening pair is scoring consistently and has even won a World Cup.”
Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma played a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup victory this year. For this reason, the team management intends to maintain its faith in this duo.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his T20 International debut against England in July 2026, becoming the youngest player to represent India in international cricket. In his 8 T20 International appearances so far, he has scored 246 runs at an average of 30.75, including two half-centuries.

Vaibhav also batted brilliantly during the series against Zimbabwe in July. He scored a half-century off just 19 balls in the opening match and finished as the highest run-scorer of the series.
Shreyas Iyer believes that the tour of New Zealand will serve as a valuable learning experience for Vaibhav. Even if he does not secure a spot in the playing eleven, gaining an understanding of conditions on foreign pitches will prove beneficial for his future. Iyer stated that by understanding the playing conditions here, Vaibhav will be able to return better prepared next time. Furthermore, he will also be able to assist other young players in the future.
