India won the T20I series, which started on October 16, 3-0 after defeating Zimbabwe by 92 runs on Tuesday in Raipur. Smriti Mandhana‘s first assignment as India’s full-time captain came from the series, which gave her the chance to experiment with player roles and combinations before important competitions.
Smriti Mandhana used the matches to rotate her batting order strategically
Smriti Mandhana strategically changed her batting order throughout the series. In order to give the middle order game time, the captain decided to bat first in the third match after the top order struggled in the first and the middle order was left with few batting opportunities in the second. Throughout the series, this rotation strategy made sure that various batting units got valuable time in the middle.
According to Smriti Mandhana, who was cited, “It’s always good to have some game time and always good to have some runs behind your back. In the first match, we could not get going again—top order as well. In the second match, the [middle order] did not get an opportunity to bat.”
India’s bowling prowess was demonstrated by a number of players during the Zimbabwe series. Throughout the series, Nandani Sharma claimed six wickets, Kranti Gaud three, and Niki Prasad three. Over the course of the three games, Smriti Mandhana used a total of six different bowlers, showcasing the captain’s variety of options.
During the series, bowling opportunities were granted to Niki Prasad and Shafali Verma. Since 2021, Shafali Verma has been bowling for Haryana and has contributed with off-spin, giving India’s bowling attack an additional dimension. The squad’s preparation benefited from being exposed to various match scenarios and conditions. Without a doubt, it [bowling options] looks good.
We all had the impression that dew was once again playing a role. There will be a lot of dew over the next three months until we get close to the Champions Trophy, so the more bowlers we have, the better, in terms of combination. The way Niki, Shafali, and everyone else contributed makes me very happy and satisfied,” Smriti Mandhana remarked.

Next year, from February 14 to 28, the first-ever six-team Women’s Champions Trophy will take place in Mumbai and Vadodara. The circumstances of the Zimbabwe series, especially the dew in the evening games, are probably going to be similar to those that teams will encounter in the Champions Trophy. India’s preparation for the tournament was evident in Smriti Mandhana’s rotation strategy and emphasis on bowling depth throughout the series.
