On October 16, 2026, Sussex announced that Jofra Archer would stay with the team for the 2027 campaign following a one-year contract extension. With the agreement, the 31-year-old pace bowler will have played for Sussex for a total of 12 seasons, dating back to his 2016 first-class debut at Hove.
The announcement solidifies one of the longer-lasting player-club partnerships in county cricket in the modern era, which has seen both long stints on the sidelines and highs at the international level. Archer talked kindly about his long history in the county. Since making my first-class debut in 2016, I have always felt at home at Sussex, so deciding to stay for an additional year was simple,” Jofra Archer said in an official statement.
How did Jofra Archer get back into red-ball cricket, and what was his record at Sussex?
With 223 wickets at an average of 25.17 throughout his first-class career, Jofra Archer is among the most successful pace bowlers to have played for Sussex in the modern era. That total covers a career that started in 2016, has been halted by injuries, but has never been cut off from the county.
A serious injury layoff ended Jofra Archer’s career in the county. Before donning Sussex whites once more in June 2025, he had not played red-ball cricket for four years. Before being called up to the England Test team, Jofra Archer returned to county action. In July 2025, he made his first Test appearance since 2021 when England played India.
The continuity that Jofra Archer has maintained with Sussex throughout his professional career—including the years when injury prevented him from playing at all—is reflected in the extension that was announced this month.
In 2027, under whom will Jofra Archer work at Sussex?
Jofra Archer’s new contract means the two will collaborate at Hove beginning with the 2027 season, and Matt Walker has been confirmed as Sussex’s new head coach. On October 16, 2026, Walker’s appointment was announced along with Archer’s extension, providing the team with a distinct leadership structure for the upcoming season. He is an elite fast bowler who offers our team something really unique. As we strive to create a successful team across all formats, keeping a player of his caliber is crucial to us,” Walker stated in the statement.

At this point, no additional information regarding Sussex’s overall squad plans for 2027 has been confirmed. The club’s main recruitment announcement ahead of the new season is Archer’s contract extension.
