According to a report the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed experienced left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as the new captain of the national women’s T20I team. This was officially confirmed on Sunday, October 18. It marks a significant leadership change ahead of Bangladesh’s upcoming international fixtures. Top-order batter Sobhana Mostary has been named as Nahida Akter’s deputy (vice-captain).
Nahida Akter has been appointed as Bangladesh’s new T20I captain
Nahida Akter replaces Nigar Sultana, who had served as captain for a long period. Sultana decided to step down from the T20I captaincy following the 2026 Asian Games, aiming to focus more on her individual performance. Having led the Bangladesh T20I side since 2022, Sultana will continue to serve as the captain of the One Day International (ODI) team; she recently led the side in a three-match ODI series against Australia.
Explaining the decision, Rafiqul Islam, chairman of the BCB’s women’s wing, highlighted Nahida’s extensive experience as vice-captain. “We consulted with members of the selection panel and others before deciding to entrust the T20I captaincy to Nahida Akter. Sobhana Mostary will be her deputy,” Rafiqul stated. He emphasized that, having served as a long-time deputy to Sultana, this is the ideal moment for Nahida Akter to step into the primary leadership role.

According to reports, the BCB was taken by surprise by Sultana’s decision to step down from the shortest format. There are also suggestions that she was unhappy with how she had been treated by the board recently, which may have prompted her decision.
This transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Bangladesh women’s team. Nahida Akter and Mostary will immediately take the reins as Bangladesh prepares for the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy in Thailand. This new leadership group faces a major challenge right from the start: they are set to take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening match of the tournament on November 12.
