Morne Morkel, India’s fast bowling coach, has defended the team’s bowlers against growing criticism, citing the rigorous schedule and psychological toll as important variables influencing performance. After multiple high-scoring West Indies chases in the current T20I series, the bowling unit has come under fire. The decider is set for Saturday, October 17 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
On Friday, October 16, Morne Morkel discussed the situation at a press conference held at the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in Bengaluru. He emphasized the human element that critics frequently ignore while acknowledging the pressure on social media and the expectations placed on India’s bowling attack. Everything posted on social media is read by me. Sometimes we overlook the significant role that mental exhaustion plays. During the pre-game press conference, Morne Morkel stated, “We have to manage that and you have to be smart with it.”

For a number of squad members, the travel burden has been especially severe. A few athletes participated in the Asian Games before being thrown straight into the West Indies series. Before joining the team for the final in Bengaluru, medalists from the Asian Games had to travel to Delhi for a presentation with Prime Minister Modi.
Morne Morkel emphasized how rest and recuperation have a direct impact on on-field performance. He cited the squad’s unrelenting schedule, citing the quick switch from the Asian Games to the West Indies series and the subsequent trip to New Zealand. In my opinion, your performance and abilities will improve after you’ve fully recovered, slept soundly, and mentally rejuvenated—all of which present a challenge. We are about to take a plane to New Zealand. There, too, the schedule is extremely busy, according to Morne Morkel.
Numerous people have criticized the bowling performances in the series. India’s bowlers limited West Indies to 171 runs in the first Twenty20 International. But in the second game, the team was unable to defend 249, giving up 209 runs while chasing 223. The bowlers conceded 247 runs in the fourth Twenty20 International in Hyderabad. Mayank Yadav gave up 52 runs in four overs, while Arshdeep Singh gave up 52 runs before retiring due to a shoulder injury.

Despite the recent setbacks, Morne Morkel said he was confident in his bowling unit. He emphasized that when assessing these players’ performances, the mental strain and demands made of them should be taken into account. With the performances these guys are currently putting on for Team India and the schedule we have, I have a lot of respect for them,” Morne Morkel remarked.
