Ahead of IPL 2027, the coaching staff of the five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI) may see a major overhaul. According to reports, the team’s head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, and the franchise have decided to part ways by mutual consent.
Following this, Mumbai Indians have begun the search for a new head coach. It is understood that the franchise is considering several experienced players and coaches for the role. The IPL 2026 season proved to be highly disappointing for Mumbai Indians.
The team managed only four wins in 14 matches and finished in ninth place in the points table. Consequently, the franchise is keen to make a strong comeback next season. Three prominent names are currently being discussed for the position of head coach:
1. Kieron Pollard
Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard is among the top contenders to become the new head coach of Mumbai Indians. Pollard shares a long-standing association with the franchise; he played for the team from 2010 to 2022 and played a pivotal role in many of their memorable victories.
Since IPL 2023, Pollard has served as the batting coach for Mumbai Indians. As a result, he possesses a deep understanding of the players, the management, and the franchise’s strategic approach.
Pollard’s greatest strength lies in his long-term connection with Mumbai Indians; he is well-versed in the team’s culture and environment. Should the franchise appoint him as head coach, it would likely be easier for the players to establish a rapport with him.
2. Hemang Badani
Former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani could also be in the running to become the new head coach of Mumbai Indians. Badani brings significant coaching experience, having worked in domestic cricket as well as with various franchise teams, serving in roles such as batting coach and mentor. He is particularly well-known for developing young batters and refining their technique.
Mumbai Indians had a very poor previous season. In such a scenario, the team requires a coach who can boost the players’ confidence while simultaneously addressing the team’s weaknesses. Badani’s experience could prove beneficial for Mumbai Indians. Should he be entrusted with this responsibility, it would represent a significant opportunity in his coaching career.
3. Rahul Dravid
Former Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid is among the most prominent names being discussed for this position. Dravid possesses extensive experience in coaching at the international level; under his guidance, the Indian team clinched the T20 World Cup title in 2024.
Dravid is recognized for his ability to groom young talent and instill discipline within a squad. Beyond working with established stars, he also possesses the experience required to steer a team through challenging situations.
For a major franchise like Mumbai Indians, Dravid could prove to be an excellent choice. His experience and strategic acumen could help the team deliver a stronger performance in IPL 2027.
According to reports, the Mumbai Indians management is currently evaluating potential candidates for the head coach role. Interviews for these candidates may take place in the coming days.

The Mumbai Indians support staff already includes Sachin Tendulkar, who serves as a mentor. Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey currently hold the roles of bowling coaches, while Carl Hopkinson serves as the fielding coach.
However, no official announcement has been made yet regarding the new head coach for Mumbai Indians. It will be interesting to see whether the franchise entrusts the responsibility to Pollard, Badani, or Dravid, or if they opt for another experienced coach.
