Indian women defeated Zimbabwe by four wickets in the opening T20I
Zimbabwe scored a competitive 114/5 in 20 overs while batting first. After that, their bowlers had an instant impact, with Michelle Mavunga and Nyasha Gwanzura striking frequently and early. India was in major trouble at 19/4 after Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Anushka Sharma, and Harmanpreet Kaur all fell within just 19 deliveries.
Then, Deepti Sharma and rookie Niki Prasad turned the tide of the game with an 82-run fifth-wicket partnership off 63 deliveries. With more than four overs remaining, India finished on 116/6 in 15.4 overs, easily completing the chase. Because of her role in winning the game, Deepti was named Player of the Match.
India’s innings was on the verge of falling apart when Deepti entered. She responded with a measured knock of 49 off 37 balls, ensuring that the partnership with Prasad continued to grow quickly while controlling the necessary run rate. The hallmark of India’s recovery was her ability to remain composed under duress.
In this match, young batting all-rounder Niki Prasad made her T20I debut and displayed no signs of nervousness. Before the other batters finished the formality, she anchored the lower half of the chase with Deepti and stayed undefeated at 39. By taking India from the depths of 19/4 to within easy reach of the 115-run target and ultimately beyond it with considerable ease, the pair’s 82-run partnership off 63 balls effectively settled the match.
