After undergoing surgery on his left hamstring on October 12, 2026, Jos Buttler will be out for a long time. The medical team has not specified when he will return.
On Monday, October 12, Jos Buttler, 36, announced the news via an Instagram post in which he appeared on a hospital bed with his left leg in a brace and gave a thumbs up.
“Succesful [sic] surgery and on the road to recovery,” he wrote in the caption, adding, “Feeling more motivated than ever!”
On September 24, 2026, when England lost the second One-Day International against Sri Lanka at Headingley, the hamstring issue initially came to light. After being hurt in the middle of the inning, Jos Buttler left the field, came back to bat for a little while, and then pulled up again. Before the injury ended his involvement, he had made 69 from 49 balls in that knock, hitting five sixes.
Which assignments could Jos Buttler miss because of the surgery?
The touring party is scheduled to depart later this week, and Jos Buttler had already been pulled from England’s tri-series assignment in Pakistan prior to the operation. The October 12, 2026, surgery now raises questions about a number of other commitments for the upcoming months.
On October 13, 2026, the ECB was supposed to announce its team for the Australia white-ball tour. Jos Buttler seems certain to miss that series in November. Since no recovery date has been set, his franchise contract with Durban’s Super Giants for the SA20, a competition that begins on January 17, 2027, is also now in doubt.
Notably, the ECB confirmed Jos Buttler’s and leg-spinner Adil Rashid’s one-year contract extensions on the day of his operation. Before the 2027 50-over World Cup, which is set to take place in South Africa, Buttler’s amended contract will expire.

In the run-up to the Headingley game, Jos Buttler had been hitting white balls with some of the consistency of his career. After the T20 World Cup, he scored 466 runs in nine white-ball international matches, including the 69-ball knock at Headingley that caused him to leave the field.
Buttler scored 87 runs earlier in 2026 as England advanced to the T20 World Cup semifinals. He became the first male cricket player to reach 15,000 career T20 runs at the domestic level, leading the Manchester Super Giants to the Hundred title and highlighting his status in the shortest format.
Buttler’s left hamstring has caused him problems on previous occasions. He missed the 2024 IPL season due to a similar injury in the same area, and the England medical staff is reportedly concerned about the recurrence. Regarding the type and scope of the surgical procedure, no formal statement has been made.
