Georgia Voll had made the adjustment from a glittering newbie to a dependable opener look easy, cementing her status as one of Australia’s most consistent performers since October 2023. Her mentality has been to embrace that challenge and she’s pushed through since Healy’s long-time retirement earlier this year by continually putting in good performances on the international front.
This young wicketkeeper-batter first came into spotlight during late 2024 when Healy was ruled out with a knee injury and the Aussies were set to face India in an ODI series. Voll silenced her doubters soon enough, debuting with an unbroken 46 before making a hundred on only her second day as an international cricketer. Those initial performances set the stage for what has been a gradual progression within the national team.
Whilst Healy remained a member of the squad, opportunities came and went but Voll made good use of the time. She learned from seniors and positioned herself for a stable role whenever the time came. She has displayed confidence, control and a more aggressive game to suit Australia’s attacking profile since taking on the opening role full-time.
Voll has cemented her importance at the Women’s T20 World Cup again. She was also key in the top order during Australia’s commanding win versus Pakistan, making 39 runs off only 28 balls. Voll settled the innings down after Beth Mooney’s wicket and carried on to set up a century partnership with Ellyse Perry, laying the groundwork for a strong total.
Voll, who is known as one of the aggressive batters, says her job is to put eat pressure on opposition opponents and provide our side with quick starts. Naturally, given their attacking styles, comparisons with Healy are inevitable but for Voll it has been a matter of shaping her own identity and then using whatever she can bring to the team in the best way possible.
Her versatility has also been on display during the tournament. Voll, who only had minimal experience catching in the role, stepped up when injuries and fitness issues troubled Australia’s wicketkeeping stock to take on this steep challenge and did so with aplomb.
Veteran all-rounder Ellyse Perry said Voll was developing quickly and the 22-year-old from Mackay had shown confidence, power and poise under pressure. Voll’s adaptability to the international scene means Perry considers her transition into the Australian side has been one of the easiest in years.
Georgia Voll seems to be on track to become Australia’s next long-term star at the top of the order with her performances continuing to impress.
