Former Tasmania fast bowler Damien Wright will make his return to his home state after being appointed Tasmania’s new bowling coach. This decision follows Wright’s stint with the West Indies women’s team, for whom he was a bowling coach in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign.
Wright is returning home after creating quite an impact on Tasmanian cricket. He was instrumental with bat and ball as a member of the team that achieved the state’s first Sheffield Shield title in 2006-07. In the final, he picked up 8 wickets in the match to go with a handy 67 runs.
The experienced coach has since linked in with the men’s program in Tasmania, working under head coach Jeff Vaughan and national pace bowling coach Adam Griffith. His appointment bolsters a coaching group which includes numerous members of Tasmania’s first T20-winning Shield side who have transitioned into high-profile coaching or administrative positions throughout Australian cricket.
Beaming at the prospect, Wright said Cricket Tasmania had been a passion of his and was excited to re-engage with players and staff whilst assisting in getting that winning culture harnessed within this team.
At the same time, Tasmania’s Big Bash League team the Hobart Hurricanes have brought in Shawn Bradstreet as their new bowling coach. James Hopes recently departed from the role, following his acceptance of the head coaching spot with the Sydney Sixers, which has now been filled by Bradstreet.
Bradstreet boasts a wealth of coaching experience, having been involved previously with Sydney Thunder and New South Wales. And he has worked alongside Hurricanes head of strategy Ricky Ponting during their stint at Major League Cricket’s Washington Freedom.
Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes General Manager of High Performance Salliann Beams welcomed the appointment of Bradstreet as a technically sharp, tactically astute individual who has an ability to create working relationships in a team environment.
The appointments of Wright and Bradstreet signal a new chapter for Tasmania and the Hurricanes as both organizations continue to strengthen their coaching structures ahead of upcoming domestic and T20 competitions.
